Baby Cakes Bakery

Today I wandered in to Baby Cakes Bakery, which is a little cupcake shoppe across the street from Melt near the corner of Taylor and Cedar in Cleveland Heights. If you're looking for some amazing cupcakes in the Heights, this is where you should go! I got to talking with Kim (she's the middle one in the picture), the owner, about her business.

They've just moved Baby Cakes back to Cleveland Heights and they don't even have the sign up yet!

I asked them what they're famous for and they pointed me in the direction of the Pink Lemonade cupcake. It was delicious! Especially the frosting- it was tangy and sweet all at once, and the cupcake was super fluffy. Baby Cakes has 31 flavors including the Pink Lemonade, butter pecan, and more traditional flavors like chocolate and vanilla. The cupcakes cost $2.50 each and I only got one because they don't take credit cards (yet?).

Kim says she's been baking "forever"- she recalls baking tea cakes with her mom. Her mom actually coined the name for the shop because she used to call Kim "baby cakes" when she was little. Baby Cakes is family owned, and the family has always been in Ohio, so this is a great business to support!

Potpourri Fondue Restaurant: Mentor, OH

If you're looking for fondue restaurants near Cleveland, check out Potpourri. It's located in Mentor which is just Northeast of the city. Potpourri Fondue Restaurant is one of the oldest fondue restaurants established in Ohio. A little on the pricey side, but very good. Their entire menu is available here. Anyways, if you're not in Cleveland or just want to make fondue at home, you'll need the Fondue Bible. It's got amazing recipes for fondues like ginger beef and lime chicken. You can find it on Amazon:

Also, because I can't help myself: Fondue for two! Fondue for two! Some hot dish!!! Fondue for two!

Shaker Square Cinemas

One of the best places to catch a movie in Cleveland is Shaker Square Cinemas. Located at the lovely Shaker Square, the theater is a lovely throwback with a beautiful interior.

You might be wondering, "How much does a ticket cost?" Well, ticket prices are about par for any movie theater. Matinees cost $6.50 and evening shows cost $9. You'll want to park in the lot behind the theater. There's metered parking up front but it won't be enough time and it's very very hard to get.

Check out what's showing right now at their website.

Shaker Square

If you're wondering, "Where is the fancy area of Cleveland?" (Or really rather, "Where is the rich area of Cleveland?", there are actually a few answers. Bratenahl, Westlake/Bay Village, and Hunting Valley come to mind. But if you're looking for fancy restaurants and upscale shopping in Cleveland, go to Shaker Square.

It's located at the junction of Shaker and North Moreland Roads. There are plenty of restaurants such as Yours Truly and Fire, art galleries, a toy store, and a Dave's Supermarket.

Antiquing in Lakewood - Vintage Faire Antiques

The thing about Vintage Faire Antiques is that the lady there is very very friendly. She told me some things about some of the items; and my friend brought me in because she remembered the kindness of this shopkeeper.

The items are all very lovely and beautifully laid out. It's easy to walk between this store and the others nearby; the Lakewood Antique Mall and Rose and Sons.

Antiquing in Lakewood - Lakewood Antique Mall

I found this old picture of a Schmidt Beer advertisement. I'm not sure how old it is, but I like posters with ladies in them.

Aaaand some green glass punch cups!

Lakewood Antique Mall was our first stop on our antiques tour of Lakewood. We found some interesting things there, as you can see above. There are more antiques stores on Detroit Avenue, which I'll add later, and include the interesting pictures from those places as well.

The Diner on Clifton

It's a tiny, classy little diner right on the edge of Lakewood. Not good if you're trying to seat more than 5 people, but if there's just one or two of you, it's perfect.

The hamburger was great and they gave me honey for my fries when I asked for it (not all restaurants do!). Good coffee, friendly waitress, decent prices. Their menu is online, too- here.
